This recorded workshop session introduces instructors to student engagement strategies in online discussions, specifically within Michigan State University’s D2L Brightspace system. Designed to help instructors evaluate and integrate tools that foster student interaction, the session focuses on D2L Discussions and Packback as primary platforms for asynchronous engagement. I begin by outlining the value of online discussions in building inclusive learning communities and walk through how to set up, manage, and grade discussions in D2L, including options for group-restricted forums and one-on-one private threads. I then demonstrate how Packback leverages AI to provide instant feedback and promote critical thinking through student-generated questions. To support this session, I helped design and script the presentation materials in collaboration with my co-presenters, ensuring a cohesive, accessible, and actionable experience for attendees. Throughout the video, I emphasize both instructional best practices and technical functionality to empower instructors in choosing and using the right tool for their goals.
This PowerPoint reflects a recent round of updates to improve accessibility and visual design, demonstrating the iterative development process we use when refining workshop materials.
