5-Minute Tutorial

Creating a Quick Recording Using Kaltura MediaSpace Express Capture

Audience: MSU Faculty/Instructors, Staff, and Teaching Assistants

Responsibilities: Script writing, Voiceover Recording, Video and Screencast Recording

Tools Used: MediaSpace, Camtasia, D2L Brightspace

This instructional video was created to introduce faculty and staff to Kaltura MediaSpace Express Capture, a browser-based tool for quickly recording webcam and screen content. It provides a step-by-step walkthrough of how to create, review, and save recordings, with tips for sharing videos in D2L and guidance on adding captions to support accessibility.

This video is embedded here for demonstration purposes. When shared with instructors through MSU's Kaltura MediaSpace, it includes full closed captions and an interactive transcript to support accessibility. MediaSpace also provides playback controls and screen reader compatibility.

Problem, Process, Takeaways

Problem

Faculty and staff at MSU often needed a quick, user-friendly way to create webcam or screen capture videos without installing software or navigating complex editing tools. Many were unaware that Kaltura MediaSpace included a browser-based option—Express Capture—that could be used directly within D2L or through MediaSpace. My team and I noticed a recurring gap in comfort and familiarity when supporting instructors who wanted to add simple, self-recorded videos to their courses.

Process

To address this need, we developed a short, accessible tutorial that guides users through Express Capture step-by-step—from logging in and selecting input devices to recording, reviewing, and embedding videos. I scripted the video to be clear and action-oriented, and I worked to ensure the visuals aligned with the narration for ease of understanding. The tutorial also includes notes on browser permissions, screen sharing settings, and accessibility considerations such as captioning—focusing on the most common pain points I’ve seen when supporting instructors.

Takeaways

This project reinforced the value of targeted, just-in-time learning resources that empower users to try new tools without feeling overwhelmed. It reminded me how important it is to anticipate user barriers and walk through tools at a realistic pace. The process also deepened my attention to accessibility and clarity in instructional scripting.
